After a thrilling weekend of racing Andy Biddle and Tracy Blumenstein of Team Livorsi walked away with the Garrwood Trophy and top SuperStock points at the 103rd running of The Detroit Yacht Club Presents the Detroit Gold Cup.
Tim McDonald and Mike DeFrees of Team Oregon Custom Marine (OCM) gained an early competitive edge by winning the timed lap qualifying match race. Gaining the pole position they were able to get an early lead and hold it for a first place win in Heat 1.
Newcomers Mike Sadlon and Dr. Rob Callery of Team Miss Vero Beach had the inside lane at the start of Heat 3. They took advantage of the clean water and pulled out an early lead that proved too difficult for the competition to overcome. Team Pier 57, Eric Treadwell/William Stem engaged in an aquatic dog fight with Livorsi for the second place points. Pier 57 showed their prowess and secured the second place spot.
Back in an inside lane for the start of Heat 3 the skill of the pilots of Team Livorsi carved their lead by taking on Jason Monton and Robert Terry of Team Coors Light. Despite their early lead they were overtaken by the relentless attack of Team Livorsi and ended the race in second place. OCM finished the heat with a third place finish.
Team Livorsi started the final heat in the outside lane. With an aggressive move in the first turn they dropped back slightly and with a sharp turn cut across the 5 lanes behind the other boats to get the inside lane in turn 1. “We talked the strategy through before the race and decided we needed to try it” said driver Andy Biddle. The strategy paid off with a second place finish. Team Pier 57 finished the race in first place but an under weight penalty dropped their position to 5th thereby giving the first to Livorsi.
